TONGUE TIE

Tongue Tie (the medical term "ankyloglossia") is a congenital condition in which the lingual (tongue) frenulum is too tight, causing restrictions in movement that can cause significant difficulty with breastfeeding, and in some instances, other health problems like dental decay or spacing, speech difficulties and digestive issues. Approximately 5% of the population has this condition, so your lactation consultant or doctor may feel that a procedure is warranted to improve symptoms.  The procedure to release this tightness is called a frenotomy or frenectomy.

Dr. Rouhani has been doing tongue tie releases in the hospital settings on Newborns and his own NICU patients for the past 10 years. He has wittnessed how drastically the procedure improves the quality of the latch and the experience of breast feeding for the baby and the mother alike. The procedure with the added help of a experienced lactation consultants improves breast feeding success.

As a neonatologist, He has taken care of patients that either because of prematurity, genetic reasons, or chronic disease prove difficult to either breast or bottle feed. This experience and interest has given him a unique understanding of breast feeding difficulties and a desire to help every newborn and new mother succeed.

Depending on the grade of the tongue tie he either uses a low voltage cautery or a efficient Diode laser. The advantages of either of these technique is no bleeding, minimal discomfort, fast healing and almost no scarring. The laser,  Epic Pro uses a solid state laser diode as a source of invisible infrared radiation. The energy is delivered to the treatment site via a single-use fiber optic tip assembly. Epic Pro (BIOLASE) offers the newest and best in laser treatment technology.
